Scientific and laboratory imaging

When you are creating a camera that can visualize stands of DNA, zoom in on live cells using low-energy microscopy or capture the death of a distant star in real-time, you need an image sensor that matches the extreme performance requirements of your application. However, in the past, it has often come with a large price tag. This is where Gpixel’s range of high-performance CMOS image sensors come to the fore, and specifically our GSENSE family.

They offer the right combination of features including global shutter, high frame rate, low read noise, high dynamic range, and back-side illumination. That means our standard product portfolio can be used in a wide range of imaging equipment for today’s laboratories and scientific studies – from high-energy physics and micro-CT scanners to soft X-ray microscopes and multispectral analysis.

Life sciences (Bio imaging)

One area where cost-effective high-quality imaging has helped bring significantly breakthroughs is in the life-sciences segment. Whether it is fast and accurate sequencing or low light measurement techniques, they all require sensors with fast frame rate, high sensitivity, high quantum efficiency (QE) and low read out noise. Our backside illuminated sensors have a quantum efficiency comparable with an Electron Multiplying CCD (EMCCD).

Microscopy

State-of-the-art microscopy often uses very low levels of radiation or electron intensity to minimize any potential damage to the sample, especially critical when imaging live cells directly. Sensors therefore need very high sensitivity and low noise to detect and measure the faint signal with a good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Our BSI sensor with thin epi-layer can directly detect the soft X-ray range from 300 to 3000 eV. Fast frame rates help researchers capture more data within limited time. Gpixel can also provide sensors with removable glass lid and no micro-lens, suitable for FOP bonding.

Spectroscopy

From bright line spectra that unveil the atomic origin of a material to studying the fluorescent discharge of compounds and gases, spectroscopy has been a key tool for many scientific breakthroughs. However, given the broad spectrum of light being emitted front-side image sensors are ineffective due to their low response to wavelengths outside of visible light (4000 to 7000 Angstroms). Gpixel’s state-of-the-art back-side-illuminated sensors, provide excellent quantum efficiency from ultra-violet (UV) to Near Infra-Red (NIR) and a dynamic range greater than 90 dB. That makes them ideal for detecting more spectral data with good precision.

Astronomy

From looking back to the first days of the universe to capturing stunning images of the night sky, astronomical CCD cameras need to be able to take very long exposures with extremely low noise. Alternatively, multiple short exposures can be taken and combined together to further reduce noise. CMOS image sensors are the best choice due to their combination of high frame rate, low read noise and good sensitivity, while enabling wide sky range without SNR degradation from dark current even during very long exposures. Gpixel’s high dynamic range sensors are also able to detect more objects with different apparent magnitude from high contrast images.
